The Munich-based startup’s aggressive capital commitment aims to break East Asia’s near-monopoly on the specialized material, securing the core hardware necessary to build its flagship magnetic confinement reactors without relying on fragile overseas supply chains.
High-temperature superconducting tape is the non-negotiable bedrock of modern magnetic fusion energy. Composed of complex ceramic compounds deposited onto thin metallic substrates, HTS tape conducts massive electric currents with zero resistance at temperatures far higher than traditional superconductors. This allows magnetic fusion reactors to generate powerful magnetic cages capable of trapping plasma heated to over 100 million degrees Celsius—hotter than the core of the Sun.
For years, global supply of fusion-grade HTS tape has remained concentrated in East Asia. A handful of manufacturers across China, Japan, and South Korea control the overwhelming majority of commercial production. Western fusion developers routinely face multi-year lead times, volatile pricing, and supply quotas that threaten to delay prototype deployments. By backing its own €140 million manufacturing infrastructure, Proxima Fusion is sidestepping these bottlenecks to retain full operational sovereignty over its manufacturing timeline.
"Securing high-temperature superconductors inside Europe is not merely a supply chain choice—it is an absolute prerequisite for sovereign clean energy hardware," said Proxima Fusion leadership during the announcement. The move marks one of the largest single industrial investments into fusion component manufacturing on European soil to date.
Spun out of the prestigious Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Proxima Fusion is developing a stellarator reactor. Unlike traditional tokamak designs—which rely on internal plasma currents to maintain stability—stellarators use intricate, computer-optimized external magnetic coils to twist magnetic field lines into a self-contained torus .
While stellarators offer continuous, steady-state plasma operation without the sudden disruptive collapses that haunt tokamaks, their complex geometric design demands extraordinary amounts of HTS tape. Thousands of kilometers of uniform, high-performance tape must be manufactured to tolerance levels measured in nanometers. Any micro-defect along a strip of tape can compromise an entire magnet, causing local heat spikes that destroy superconductivity.
Building an internal factory allows Proxima Fusion to customize HTS tape specifications directly for its proprietary magnet geometry. Rather than buying off-the-shelf tape designed for generic electrical grids or medical imaging, the facility will optimize critical current density, mechanical durability, and strain tolerance specifically for stellarator applications .
The €140 million facility represents a structural shift in how European deep-tech startups manage hardware risk. Historically, Western software and biotech companies raised large venture rounds while outsourcing heavy manufacturing overseas. Proxima Fusion is opting for vertical integration, taking full control of chemical vapor deposition processes, high-vacuum tape coating, and quality assurance testing under one roof.
This strategy reflects broader geopolitical efforts within the European Union to localize critical technological supply chains, ranging from semiconductors and advanced batteries to quantum computing components. As fusion moves from university research labs into commercial industrial plants, access to rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) tape has emerged as the defining industrial barrier.
The capital expenditure will fund advanced vapor deposition equipment, automated quality inspection corridors, and cleanroom facilities optimized for high-volume roll-to-roll tape production. Beyond supporting Proxima Fusion’s own prototype power plant, the facility’s output could supply broader European clean energy projects, power grids, and aerospace manufacturers requiring high-performance superconducting components.
By establishing dedicated domestic production capacity, Proxima Fusion protects its deployment timeline against international trade restrictions, export controls, and foreign supply disruptions. The €140 million investment transforms a theoretical physics challenge into a concrete manufacturing reality, anchoring Europe’s bid to deliver grid-ready fusion power before the decade closes.
